A Raga is an ancient Indian Classcial musical format in which Sound is considered to be a manifestation of the Goddess Saraswati. Over the millennia, thousands of Ragas have evolved, and each one is arranged according to the calendar, the season, time of day, mood and occasion. Although Ragas have highly complex rhythmic structures and melodies, much of the actual performance of a Raga is pure improvisation - one might say Divine inspiration. Rik Masterson and Michael Stirling’s style of North Indian (Hindustani) Classical singing, known as Khyal, originated in the Uttar Pradesh region of India. Rik and Michael studied under the same Guru - Pandit Pran Nath - in the Kirana Gharana, a family-based Khyal tradition which traces its origins back to the late sixteenth century.
